| Five years ago, Artist In Iron was commissioned to produce a front door treatment for a large gothic/Georgian style mansion near Atlanta. The entrance consists of a pair of huge front doors measuring 9 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The owner asked us to design a set of door handles. The handles were to be located in the center of each door. A special opening mechanism, 18 inches long, that would link the active door handle to the tung at the edge of the door, was to be designed and built as well. The handles were to have a unicorn theme and be sized in proportion with the door. The result was a unicorn door handle/knocker measuring 18 inches high and 9 inches wide and constructed of bronze. Shown here with a tarnished bronze finish, the metal soon began to take on subtle green and gray highlights after its installation. Also shown is the interior handle (right) forged in iron. |
